  • 1 handful fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped

  • 1/2 jalapeno, diced (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

  • 1 garlic clove, grated

  • 1 lime, juiced

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 T toasted sesame oil

  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 2 T extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1 T canola oil

  • 1 (6-ounce) block ahi tuna (yellowfin)

  • 1 ripe avocado, halved, peeled, pitted, and sliced

  • Sesame seeds

In a mixing bowl, combine half the cilantro, jalapeno, ginger, garlic, lime juice, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Stir the ingredients together until well incorporated. Divide marinade in half and pour half over the tuna steak in a small dish. Let tuna marinate for 10-15 minutes. Reserve the other half for a drizzle/garnish.

Place a skillet over medium-high heat and coat with canola oil. Season the tuna generously with salt and pepper. Lay the tuna in the hot oil and sear for 1.5 minutes on each side to form a slight crust. Remove to a cutting board and let rest a couple of minutes. Slice and serve the seared tuna with the sliced avocado and the remaining cilantro sauce drizzled over the whole plate. Sprinkle with remaining cilantro and sesame seeds.
