Healthier Homemade Dog Food

This is cheaper than store-bought and you know exactly what’s in it, i.e. no fillers. It may seem weird, but canned pumpkin is great for your dog. In addition to being packed with nutrients, the fiber in pumpkin has the unique ability to cure both constipation and diarrhea in dogs. Who knew?!

Yields about 10 cups

  • 1 1⁄2 c brown rice, or millet, farro, oats, quinoa, or whole grain pasta

  • 3 T coconut oil

  • 3 lbs ground turkey or chicken

  • 2 c chopped broccoli or frozen peas or spinach

  • 1 large carrot, grated or shredded

  • 1 large zucchini, grated or shredded

  • 1 14-oz can pumpkin puree

  • 2 T Digest All probiotic powder (optional)

  • 1 apple, shredded

In a large Dutch oven, cook the rice with 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, cook until tender (it’s ok to overcook it!), then drain. Return the rice to the Dutch oven.

Heat coconut oil in a large skillet and cook the ground meat until browned, breaking up large clumps and crumbling as it cooks.

Add the cooked meat and any accumulated juices and oils to the Dutch oven containing the rice. Add broccoli, carrot, zucchini, pureed pumpkin, and apple. Stir in probiotic, if using. There’s no need to cook the vegetables. Just stir to combine and the residual heat from the rice and ground turkey will soften the vegetables.

Now you’re ready to package your dog food into freezer-safe containers, or plastic bags. Be sure to label with amount and date. We keep a week’s worth in the fridge for daily feedings. Our small dogs (one is 12 lbs and the other is 10 lbs) get about 3⁄4 cup once a day, and they are on a weight-management plan!

Notes: In general, look for a ratio of 50% protein, 25% veggies/greens, 25% grain. Feel free to mix and match veggies, but there are some things dogs should NEVER eat: NO xylitol, chocolate, avocado, cherries, grapes/raisins, tomatoes, asparagus, mushrooms, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts. This list is not exhaustive; consult your vet if you are not sure.
